Let’s move to… Folkestone

folkestone removals

Thinking of moving to Folkestone?

With its trendy eateries, galleries, boutiques and elegant period buildings, Folkestone looks like – and is – a town on the up again. Its story is that of seaside towns around Britain – a thriving resort at the start of the 20th century, it fell into decline and disrepair until regeneration began to turn its fortunes around. Yet Folkestone stands out for its character – underneath the gloss of recent investment, the town still has a thick layer of grit. And it’s all the better for it.

Folkestone’s regeneration owes a great deal to Roger de Haan, billionaire entrepreneur (he is the former owner of Saga, one of the town’s biggest employers) turned benefactor who has donated tens of millions of pounds to develop the town and support charities and schools. In particular, de Haan has funded the regeneration of the Harbour Arm, now a vibrant promenade lined with food and drink outlets, open-air seating and a big screen showing sporting events and films.

Across the harbour sits the much-lauded, Michelin Guide-listed Rock Salt restaurant; but the town’s best food is actually found at its more homespun establishments, from pub grub by the fire in the Pullman to fabulous vegetarian and vegan food at Beano’s, whose vegan sticky toffee pudding beats most other sticky toffee puddings we’ve eaten.

The beaches are, of course, the town’s best asset; both Folkestone and Sandgate are rated excellent for water quality, and though they’re mostly shingle, there’s a sandy beach by the harbour called Sunny Sands. You can enjoy a lovely walk along the seafront promenade, lined with pastel beach huts, from the harbour up to the Lower Leas Coastal Park, which has the south east’s largest free adventure play area. Keep going and you’ll find yourself in Sandgate, with its cute Victorian cottages and independent shops and cafes.

The arts scene is another of Folkestone’s strengths; there are two theatres, an annual book festival and a charming creative quarter of independent shops, galleries and cafes. Here you’ll find record stores, clothes shops and the delightful Steep Street coffee house, which has shelves of books for customers to peruse. Plus there’s the Triennial art festival – as part of which, in 2014, artist Michael Sailstorfer buried gold bars collectively worth £10,000 on the beach. No one knows whether they’ve all been found – you might strike lucky.

Houses here are not only cheaper than in much of Kent, but are really truly stunning in the west end of town, whose wide tree-lined boulevards are graced by enormous Victorian and Edwardian villas and period townhouses converted into flats. And transport links are fantastic – London is less than an hour away by train, with three services an hour to St Pancras and Charing Cross, plus you have the Eurotunnel on your doorstep and the Eurostar terminal 15 minutes away at Ashford.

At family-run Kent removal firm Colin Batt Removals, we’ve been helping people settle into homes across the county for 40 years – and are proud of our lovely corner of England. We’re based in Ashford and cover all of Kent, carrying out removals in Folkestone, Maidstone, Canterbury, Tonbridge and anywhere else you care to mention – we often work nationally and internationally too, as we specialise in piano removals. Why use a BAR Member for your house move?

British Association of Removers Logo and Chartered Trading Standards InstitueChoosing a BAR Member for your removal

A good removal firm can take so much of the stress out of moving that it can be quite transformative. But how do you know you’re choosing a good company? One sign to look for is membership of the British Association of Removers professional body, to which Colin Batt Removals is proud to belong.

The association has existed for more than a century, and around 400 removals and storage firms across the UK are now members, carrying out more than 280,000 home moves between them across the country each year. One of the main roles of the association, alongside giving professional advice and lobbying governments, is to ensure members meet high standards of service and transparency – if they don’t, they get booted out.

      Code of conduct

To become a BAR member, a removal company has to prove that they can meet certain criteria, covering things like premises, vehicles, staff, operations, contracts, insurance, complaints and quotations – BAR members must provide free, no-obligation, clear and fair quotes. They must adhere to the BAR code of practice and provide evidence that they are giving good service.

All members are inspected annually and are also financially vetted to make sure they are sound.

      Deposit guarantee

It’s standard practice in the removal industry that you’ll be asked for at least part of the cost upfront. When you choose a BAR member, that money is protected by the association’s Advance Payment Guarantee. This means that, if the firm you choose ceases trading before you move, either another BAR member will step in and move you or you’ll get your money back. Visit the BAR Advanced Payment Guarantee Page to learn more, including the full terms and conditions.

      Dispute resolution

If you have a dispute with your removal firm, the Association offers an Alternative Dispute Resolution Scheme which is independently operated by:Furniture and Home Improvement Ombudsman

The Furniture and Home Improvement Obudsman 3-4 Viewpoint Office Village, Babbage Road, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, SG1 2EQ.  Tel: 0333 241 3209. Web: fhio.org

      Specialist movers

If you’re moving outside mainland Europe, you’ll want a specialist in international moves who can ensure your possessions are packed and insured appropriately, and delivered safely and promptly by sea or air. The BAR Overseas Group consists of around 50 firms who have the necessary expertise and experience. Around the same number are members of the BAR Commercial Moving Group thanks to their expertise in commercial relocations.

How do I find out if a firm belongs to the British Association of Removers?

You can check on the association’s website at www.bar.co.uk or call them on 01923 699480, or you can check on the removal company’s website. The BAR logo should be displayed alongside the CTSI (Chartered Trading Standards Institute) logo as a link. If you click on it, it will take you to a page on the association’s website confirming that the company is a member.

        Four property hotspots in Kent

        kent hot spots

Best places to buy a property in Kent

Beautiful countryside, golden beaches, pretty villages and historic attractions … the question isn’t why would you swap London for Kent, but why haven’t you done so already? Not only can people actually afford houses here (yes, really!), transport links from some parts of the county are so good you might even be able to spend less time travelling to and from work than you do now.

These are just four of the best places to buy property in Kent …

        Goudhurst

Goudhurst is probably the prettiest village in Kent. The views of the Wealden countryside as you drive down the hill into the main street are delightful, and combined with the period buildings, 14th-century church and tranquil pond, make you feel as if everything stressful has just disappeared from your radar. There are several good pubs here, including the Star and Eagle at the top of the hill, independent shops and a spa – and Bedgebury Forest, Bewl Water and Scotney Castle are all nearby.

        Sevenoaks

Featured in the Sunday Times’ list of best places to live this year and last, Sevenoaks is one of the most affluent towns in Kent. It’s fantastically placed for commuting to London – the M25 runs past the edge of the town, or on the train, it’s 25 minutes to London Bridge – yet surrounded by green belt countryside, with the 1,000-acre Knole Park close by. It feels family-friendly and safe yet still lively, with plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants, and an arts centre with a theatre and cinema.

        Deal

Deal has become fashionable over the past decade or two, but retains an understated charm. As well as restaurants, cafes, galleries and independent shops, the town has a small theatre, two castles and of course the beach and seafront promenade, which you can follow from the impressive houses on The Marina at the north end all the way into neighbouring Walmer. A stroll to the end of the pier, from where you can look back at the pastel-coloured buildings lining the seafront, will warm anyone’s heart.

        Brenchley

Lying in the High Weald area of outstanding natural beauty, and surrounded by orchards and farmland, pretty Brenchley is a prime example of why Kent is still the garden of England. If you love country walks, you’ll be happy here. With timbered houses and a church with an avenue of 400-year-old yew trees, it’s a place where you can step back in time while staying connected to the modern world – the A21 is three miles away, or Tunbridge Wells is around 45 minutes from London Bridge by train.

Persuaded? At family-run Kent removals company Colin Batt Removals, we’ve been helping people settle into their new homes for more than 40 years – and we’re always pleased and proud to welcome people into our beautiful county.

We aim to make the whole process as stress-free as possible for you – we offer a packing and unpacking service, so that’s one big task off your hands, and we also have our own storage facility in Kent if you’re not able to move all your belongings into your new home straightaway.

We’re based in Ashford, but cover the whole county, particularly Maidstone, Canterbury, Folkestone and Tonbridge. Call us on 01233 740395 for an informal chat or a free quote.

How your business could benefit from relocating to Kent

        office relocation kent

        Relocating your business to Kent

We’ve run a business in Kent for 40 years and we love it. You will too. Here are four reasons why …

        Fast trains to London

The high-speed rail link has made getting to London from many Kent towns so easy that they’re now closer to central London, in terms of journey time, than some parts of the capital. Ashford is half an hour from Stratford and 38 minutes from St Pancras; Canterbury and Folkestone are both reachable in an hour; Ebbsfleet, in north Kent, is 11 minutes from Stratford and 18 minutes from St Pancras. And everywhere else along the line – Whitstable, Dover, Deal, Margate, Faversham – has benefited too. This also makes for impressively quick travel to the rest of the UK  – you can get from Ashford to York within three hours.

        International travel

We promise this won’t all be about trains. But Kent is really good at them. Eurostar services take one hour and 39 minutes from Ashford to Brussels, and as little as one hour and 52 minutes from Ashford to Paris; they also stop at Ebbsfleet, 15 minutes further up the line. Add in the Port of Dover, Europe’s busiest ferry port, and the Eurotunnel, which carries 21.3 million tonnes of freight and 10.6 million passengers every year, and nowhere in the UK outside London is better placed for international trade and travel.

        Park life

Kent has two science parks: Discovery Park, in Sandwich, has more than 160 businesses, including drugs giant Pfizer, while Kent Science Park, just outside Sittingbourne, is home to 66 more. The latter was named south east England’s best life science research facility in 2016 by the United Kingdom Science Park Association.

Kent also has an enterprise zone – a Government-designated area that offers members benefits including tax relief and business rate relief – the latter worth up to £55,000 every year for five years. The zone covers sites across Ebbsfleet, Medway and Maidstone, and is aimed at businesses working in medical and life sciences, engineering, manufacturing and creative and digital technology.

        Money, money, money

There’s a lot of funding on offer to help companies in Kent – interest-free loans for small businesses through the Kent and Medway Business Fund, investment through the Kent Life Science Fund and the Kent Investor Network, and grants from the South East Business Boost and Low Carbon Across the South East programmes. There’s also the Kent Leader grants programme for small rural businesses, including farmers, growers and foresters. Locate in Kent, which supports businesses wanting to move to the county, can provide information.

When you do the sensible thing and move to Kent, you’ll need experienced commercial movers to handle the process for you, as office relocation can be extremely disruptive. At Kent removals company Colin Batt Removals, we’ve been helping individuals and companies settle in the county for more than 40 years. Our experienced staff are trained to make things run as smoothly as possible and keep the impact on productivity to a minimum. Our office relocation services include a full packing and unpacking service if you want it, as well as document storage during the changeover.

We’re based in Ashford, but cover all of Kent, particularly Maidstone, Canterbury, Folkestone and Tonbridge. Call 01233 740395 for a free quote.
